THE HAFS CURRICULUM

Structured Progression of Qur'anic Recitation Studies

Tier 1 - Preparation for Shahada Certification

This level is designed for students seeking Shahada Certification by perfecting their recitation in both theory and application. Upon completion, students will:

Recite with proper Tajweed and fluency.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of Tajweed theory, including:
- Makharij (Pronunciation)
- Ahkam (Rules)
- Sifaat (Characteristics)
- Waqf (Stopping Rules)
Become eligible to sit for the Shahada Certification Exam.

Tier 2 - Ijāzah Program

Students at this level are eligible for the Ijāzah exam upon teacher approval. This program includes:

Advanced Tajweed theory and application.
Teaching eligibility—qualified students may take on paid teaching positions.
Learning basic rules for leading prayer.
Studying the history of Qur'anic preservation, including:
- Compilation and transmission of the Qur'an.
- A brief historical background of Hafs ‘an Asim and Qira'at.

Tier 3 - Qira'at Mastery (Post-Graduate Level – ABC Students Only)

This level is for students aiming for mastery in Qira'at at an advanced scholarly level. Key areas of study include:

Teaching Tajweed Sughrah and Kubrah.
Understanding Usul and Furush differences across Qira'at.
Differentiating Qira'at vs. Maqamat.
Conducting an in-depth analysis of Qira'at, including:
- Compilation and preservation.
- Controversies surrounding Ahruf.
